- The next two things we need to do are add some foreground elements. Let’s first start with the foreground trees. Create a layer on TOP of the character this time. On that layer draw two trees with a solid color (dark brown preferably). How do you draw a tree, you say? Quite easy actually. Just create two long sticks of solid color each going somewhat in front of the character, like this:
- Now, add some highlights to the tree (using a lighter color) where you think the light source is coming from. The highlights need to be as basic as possible. This is because all your detail will disappear in just a moment!
- You may also want to put some leaves on the tree small as to not detract from the character.
- Once you’ve done that, go up again to Filter > Blur > Guassian blur. This time we are really gonna blur it. Choose a setting that will wipe out all your detail and somewhat smear your trees on the canvas. It should look something like this:
- Now that doesn’t look too bad! On to the last step. The green area around the feet of the character still looks really blah. How can we spice it up? Custom brushes!! If you haven’t use them before, today is the day to start. They are your basic Photoshop brush, just crafted in a special shape that’s better for certain types of painting like grass, hair, fur, etc. I got some custom grass brushes made by David Nagel.
- To make the grass, enlarge the brush until one blade of grass is as big as you want it to be. Choose a slightly lighter color than the background, and then color them in! To make it more realistic, choose a couple of different colors, sizes, and shapes to make the grass look varied.
- After doing that, you piece should look something like this!
And that is the conclusion to the tutorial. Not too much work huh? Hopefully the tutorial was pretty follow-able. Leave comments if you have any suggestions or have trouble understanding any part of it! Here’s an example of what a finished product could look like.
